Anita 'Needy' Lesnicki and Jennifer Check have been inseparable since childhood, though they have little in common. After several of their friends and classmates die in mysterious circumstances, Needy begins to suspect Jennifer may be hiding some truly dark secrets.
A modern cult classic from writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) and director Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Yellowjackets).
This BFI Film Academy Recommends screening will be followed by a new recorded Q&A with Karyn Kusama, hosted by Sarah Williams, and tickets are only £3 for 15s-25s.
Young Programmer Holly Elms explains why she selected this title:
Jennifer’s Body is one of those rare films. A film that turns genre conventions on its head so well that you forgot they ever existed. No longer is the pretty girl food for the monster, she is the monster. The queer subtext that typically permeates horror films is certainly no longer subtext. As a teenager I remember watching this film in the wake of the MeToo movement and being blown away by the sharp, satirical and self-aware tone of the film made me realise that horror was a genre for women like me. Queer women and feminist women and women interested in being messy and funny and wholly imperfect. Jennifer’s Body has inspired so many like me, and I have no doubt that it will continue to inspire.
