It is 1980 and Hilary works as the Cinema manager at the Empire on the Margate seafront where the staff there are like family and she loves her job, but melancholy fills the air. As the UK falls into economic turmoil, Hilary’s life seems to slide evermore into a darker place. However, a young man called Stephen begins in the box office and things begin to look brighter. With an incredible central performance from Olivia Coleman and beautifully shot by the legendary Roger Deakins with a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, this is a poignant and timely love letter to the cinema.
