The Glass Menagerie is a haunting drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, regarded by many critics as being a theatrical masterpiece.
The play is introduced to the audience by Tom, the narrator and protagonist, as a memory play based on his recollection of his mother Amanda and his sister Laura. Because the play is based on memory, Tom cautions the audience that what they see may not be precisely what happened, since they are seen through the filter of time.
“Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated... for memory is seated predominantly in the heart”.
The Glass Menagerie is a haunting drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, regarded by many critics as being a theatrical masterpiece. The play is highly autobiographical and features characters based on Tennessee Williams himself, his histrionic mother and his mentally fragile sister. This wonderful play contains themes which continue to resonate with audiences in the present day.
