The South African photographer Ernest Cole’s ground-breaking photobook House of Bondage published in 1967 was one of the most significant works of the 20th century, exposing the inhumanity and injustice of the South African apartheid to the world. However, the book exiled him to Europe and America for the rest of his life, enraged for decades by the silence of the West in the face of the regime’s oppression of his people. This new documentary by Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) narrated by LaKeith Stanfield, is a kind of detective thriller, looking at reorienting our perspectives on society and history and Cole’s contribution to our understanding of race.
