Jazz musician Fred Madison and his wife Renee’s struggling marriage is plagued by his insecurities and paranoia, made worse when they begin receiving mysterious videotapes of their home. His mind shredded, one day Fred awakes to find her dead and him accused of murder. Whilst in jail he mysteriously disappears and in his place is a young mechanic named Pete. Confused, Pete is released and goes back to his everyday life, until he meets a young woman named Alice looking to escape her life as the girlfriend of dangerous Mr Eddy. This fascinating story of male anxiety and the unreliability of memory culminates in what feels like one of Lynch’s most personal films, a nightmarish noir played out in the overly bright sunshine of L.A.
