The town of Littlehampton in 1920s is a fairly quiet town. One day pious Edith Swan begins receives a scandalous, foul-mouthed anonymous letter and immediately accuses her neighbour, the rowdy Rose Gooding of sending it. Rose is promptly questioned by police officer Gladys, who thinks they have the wrong writer. Together, with this resourceful group of women Gladys vows to find the real sweary culprit.
