In 1976 Englishman Tom has arrived in Buenos Aires to begin teaching at a prestigious boarding school, running away from himself and his past. However, it is not the calm easy job he expects, Argentina is fraught with political violence and despite the headmaster’s hope that the school be above such matters, their way of life is at risk. Travelling to Uruguay on holiday, Tom encounters a penguin drenched in oil from a spill, and against his better judgement, rescues the bird, naming him Juan Salvador. In doing so, he becomes bonded to Juan Salvador, and after sneaking him back to Argentina, Tom begins a strange and beautiful friendship with the penguin who becomes an unwitting agent of change for him and the whole school. Based on the memoir by Tom Michell, this is a unique and moving true story which has captured imaginations around the globe.
