_____

In November 2021, a documentarian takes a dreamlike and inquisitive look at 26 royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey that are due to leave Paris and return to their country of origin: the present-day Republic of Benin. Using multiple perspectives Mati Diop (Atlantics) considers how these artifacts should be received in a country that has reinvented itself in their absence. A poetic and immersive work that delves into far-reaching issues surrounding appropriation, self-determination and restitution.

What people are saying

“A striking, stirring example of the poetry that can result when the dead and the dispossessed speak to and through the living.”

—Jessica Kiang, Variety
