France/Italy/Romania/Belgium/2009/123mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Radu Mihaileanu. With Aleksei Guskov, Mélanie Laurent, Dmitri Nazarov.
Twenty-five years after being fired from his position as the conductor of Moscow’s Bolshoi Orchestra for refusing to fire Jewish players, Andrei Filipov is now the concert hall’s caretaker and a defeated man. When he intercepts a fax from Paris’ Theatre du Chatelet begging the Bolshoi to step in when another orchestra cancels, Andrei seizes the opportunity. With the help of his best friend, he gathers together his former musicians from far and wide to take the place of the current Bolshoi. But, the only piece he will conduct is Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto and the only soloist he’ll accept is young virtuoso French violinist Anne-Marie Jacquet. Based partly on a true story, this is a riotous, emotional, glorious adventure into the world of one man’s passion and those talented individuals that make up a world class orchestra.
